Planters Nuts
Mr. Peanut is an icon nut - literally. The cartoon peanut with his top
hat and cane is one of the easiest recognizable brand name icons. Planters
Nuts is a century old company that has sold billions of peanuts over the
years.
It all began in 1906, just two years before the first Model-T Ford was
sold for $850.00. Amedeo Obici founded Planters Nuts and it was known
as Planters Nut & Chocolate Company in 1908. By 1916, Mr. Peanut was "born" and
has remained the company icon for Planters Nuts ever since. Standard Brands
purchased the Planters Nut & Chocolate Company in 1961 and a year
later, Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts were introduced.
Standard Brands was merged with Nabisco and then Kraft Foods bought Nabisco
in 2000. While Planters Nuts changed hands over the years, Mr. Peanut
never faltered. He first appeared in advertising in the Saturday Evening
Post in 1918. By 1942 Mr. Peanut appeared for Planters Nuts on a billboard
in Times Square. He and the Planters Nut Mobile appeared in the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2002 and during that same year became the preferred
snack nut of NASCAR.
Planters Nuts are retailed nationwide and are available dry roasted,
honey roasted, salted and unsalted, and even chocolate covered in the
solely peanut form. Planters mixed nuts are also available with primarily
peanuts and a few cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, pecans, and hazelnuts
thrown in. Planters mixed nuts are the most popular consumer choice for
the traditional holiday Chex Mix preparation. Planters Nuts also manufactures
Cheez Balls and Curls. There is no Mr. Cheez Ball, only Mr. Peanut appears
on the bright blue can with the yellow lid. You can't miss Planters Nuts
products in the store - just look for the stately Mr. Peanut dressed to
the nines.
